In the vibrant landscape of ecological initiatives and sustainable innovation, the Sustainable Development Award 2023 has highlighted projects of exceptional excellence and commitment. The Wall2Water in Ferla (Sicily), a collaboration between SVI.MED.-Euromediterranean Centre for the Sustainable Development and IRIDRA, was recognised as one of the best practices in Italy.

The event, now in its thirteenth edition, was promoted by the Foundation for Sustainable Development and Ecomondo-Italian Exhibition Group, with the support of MASE. The awards were aimed at companies, start-ups and local authorities. They were awarded to those who stood out for their eco-innovation, the effectiveness of their environmental and economic results and their potential for dissemination.

Edo Ronchi, President of the Foundation for Sustainable Development, highlighted the exceptional nature of this year's edition, marked by a record number of exceptionally high quality entries:

The Award has become the showcase for excellence in green economy practices. This year we received an unprecedented number of high quality entries. The participation of local public administrations and businesses was also very high, showing how a new green consciousness has spread throughout the territory to make citizens' lives more sustainable

It is in the context of this latter sector that the Wall2Water stood out, being recognised as one of the best proposals in the "Circular Water Management in collaboration with Enea" sector. The project, located at the Istituto Comprensivo Statale Valle dell'Anapo in the municipality of Ferla in Sicily, is a green wall realised by SVI.MED. and designed by IRIDRA for the collection, treatment and reuse of greywater, actively promoting environmental sustainability. The ongoing monitoring of the green wall will be ensured through the CARDIMED project, providing a continued commitment to its environmental impact.

The commission that selected the winners, made up of experts in circular economy, sustainable mobility and water management, highlighted the importance of projects such as Wall2Water in the field of sustainability.

This year, the Sustainable Development Award 2023 was dedicated to Lorenzo Cagnoni, President of Ecomondo and IEG, in recognition of his key role in supporting initiatives for environmental sustainability.

The Ferla Wall2Water continues to inspire and stand out as a good practice for water reuse, participating in another important European award and being shown worldwide thanks to the selection of the short film Gocce di Rugiada (Drops of Dew) in 17 international film festivals.
