FruitFlyNet-ii organizes field demonstration of the electronic system MedFlyNet for the monitoring and control against the Mediterranean fruit fly

On 12 of October 2023, a field demonstration of the integrated MedFlyNet Location Aware System (LAS) developed within the FruitFlyNet-ii project against the Med fruit fly (Ceratitis Capitata) will be held at the Citrus Farms  in Foiniki, Asopos, Laconia, Greece. The prototype includes the MedFlyTrap, namely an e-trap that enables remote monitoring of med fly catches and various e-services that process risk maps and, through a DSS, indicate the areas of the citrus (oranges) groves that need to be treated, as well as the amount of pesticide that needs to be used.

The coordinator of the project Professor Theodore Tsiligiridis(*) and his colleagues Professor Dionysios Perdikis (**) and Dr Costas Pontikakos(*) of the Informatics Laboratory(*) and the Laboratory of Zoology and Entomology(**) of the University of Athens, will present the e-trap innovation and show its main functionalities. They will also present the LAS illustrating some important e-services, with the direct involvement of the participants, like the geodatabase creation and use, how to input microclimatic parameters, the insect identification and counting, the fruit infestation, the risk (spraying) maps production, the e-guidance, and the traceability and finally the evaluation, The involvement of UAV technology closely related to the Living Labs already created will also explored in farm digitalization, sampling for fruit infestation and spraying applications. 

The event will be followed by an informative debate in all aspects of LAS. The aim is to fully explore the contribution of the new MedFlyNet prototype in the citrus cultivation innovations.

The meeting is aimed at farmers, producers, citrus cooperatives, agricultural entrepreneurs, agronomists and agricultural service providers.
