The ENSERES Project partner MedCities in Spain is organizing a study visit in collaboration with the Municipality of Sfax in Tunisia to the Port of Barcelona in Catalonia during the first week of September 2023. The visit will engage stakeholders from the Sfax fishing port with the objective of enhancing waste monitoring and management practices, and so the socio-ecological resilience through Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) tools.

During the study visit, participants will engage in various activities to achieve two main objectives.

  • Complement the development of a monitoring plan and identify concrete measures to prevent marine waste at the Sfax port in Tunisia, and
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange between public authorities and technical personnel to strengthen waste monitoring and management capabilities at the Sfax fishing port by promoting sustainable practices.

The agenda will include presentations, discussions, and guided visits. Participants will explore waste monitoring initiatives like "Fish for litter" in collaboration with MedWaves and the regional waste agency, and other marine litter and pollution related projects like Act4Litter and PlasticBusters to gain insights from successful prevention, mitigation and waste management strategies, including the fishing industry.

The ENSERES project thanks the regional and port authorities, as well as other collaborators from Sfax and Barcelona, for supporting the study visit as an opportunity to foster synergies, support sustainable coastal management, and contribute to the conservation of the Mediterranean's marine environment.
