TRANSDAIRY Living Lab HandBook

The TRANSDAIRY Living Lab Handbook serves as a comprehensive guide to the innovative and dynamic living laboratory dedicated to transforming the dairy industry. This handbook encapsulates the essence of the TRANSDAIRY Living Lab, offering a detailed overview of its mission, objectives, and methodologies. It provides a glimpse into the collaborative efforts and cutting-edge research conducted within the living lab, showcasing its role as a hub for experimentation, knowledge exchange, and sustainable dairy practices.

3.7.1_Co-publication Using innovative legume-based mixtures as cover crops in a multi-functional olive system

The main objective of this experiment is to provide useful indications on sustainable management of multifunctional olive systems under Mediterranean rainfed conditions by analysing the effects of different soil management on olive trees. Two field trials were established in 2022 in Italy and Lebanon, using a randomised block design and comparing four treatments: (1) cover crop with innovative mixture (IM); (2) cover crop with commercial mixture (CM); (3) natural cover + fertilization (NC); (4) traditional soil tillage + fertilization (ST). The preliminary results referred to the first year showed a better establishment of NC compared to both mixtures, regardless of whether it is below or outside the tree canopy. The higher grass-based biomass produced by NC below the tree canopy may have influenced the competition for available soil water between the sward and tree components. Regarding the water potential of olive trees, during the period of greatest water deficit, ST showed lower levels of water potential and NC showed a significantly lower photochemical efficiency. Moreover, NC promotes a smaller fruit size while no significant differences emerged between the other treatments.

3.7.1_Co-publication Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of historical olive (Olea europaea Linnaeus 1753 subsp. europaea) cultivar Mehras in Jordan

The complete mitochondrial genome of the olive cultivar Mehras was determined using high- throughput sequencing technology. It consisted of 710,808 base pairs and comprised 70 genes, including 44 protein-coding genes, 23 tRNA genes, and 3 rRNA genes, with a GC content of 44.7%. Significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertions/deletions (InDels) were detected throughout the mitogenome. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted using other genotypes, including five olive cultivars, three related species, and Olae exasperata as an out- group. The analysis revealed that the olive cultivar Mehras shares an ancient common ancestor with the Frantoio cultivar from Italy and the Manzanilla cultivar from Spain, which confirms previous findings based on plastome sequencing.

BEEP video story: How to develop an Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model (EE-HBIM)

BEEP project aimed at strengthening the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. The testing of this emerging technology on built heritage was performed to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock. The project provided public administrations with a powerful method for the energy rehabilitation of public buildings to be supported with private funds through the Energy Performance Contracting. The project main was an innovative methodology based on the integration of emerging technologies tested on 9 heritage public buildings located in Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt.

BEEP Guide (extended version): How to develop an Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model (EE-HBIM)

This guidelines’ document aims to enhance the capacity of public local administrations to design, and realise innovative energy and environmental improvement on historic public buildings, through a multidisciplinary and integrated digital approach (using Building Information Modelling and performance-based design to develop an Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model - EE-HBIM). The guideline is based on the testing of this emerging technology on built heritage in eight different EU and non EU Mediterranean countries to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock of the Med area. The project will provide public administrations with a powerful method for the energy rehabilitation of public buildings to be supported with private funds through the Energy Performance Contracting (EPC).

BEEP Guide: How to develop an Energy Efficient Heritage Building Information Model (EE-HBIM)

This technical guideline proposes a methodology for the energy audit of a historical building to support its energy and environmental improvement, from the analyses to the design stage up to the implementation, using Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) to attract funding. Each section of the guideline can also be used as a technical specification for tender activities.

Co-Publication: Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mediterranean Countries

The REIM, a joint initiative by the Network of Castles and Medieval Towns and iWORLD ETS, introduces the Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mediterranean Countries. This publication showcases efforts since 2004 to preserve and celebrate Mediterranean heritage, culminating in a digital platform with over 260 listed elements from Sicily, Algarve, Andalusia, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. Through detailed descriptions, images, and videos, the REIM offers an immersive journey into shared traditions, rituals, and crafts, fostering cross-cultural appreciation and collaboration. Additionally, it lays the groundwork for the CRESPIEM: a network aimed at coordinating efforts to safeguard and promote Mediterranean cultural heritage, paving the way for a future of mutual understanding and prosperity.

Co-Publication: Revitalising Heritage Sites Through 3D Modelling: An Analysis of the (iHERITAGE) Project's Outcomes ICT Solutions

This research delves into the innovative technological methods employed within the iHERITAGE project, funded by the European Union through the ENI CBC MED Programme. Focusing on Egyptian cultural heritage revitalization, the study meticulously examines the restoration of key archaeological sites like the Workers' City at the Pyramids and the Solar Boat of Khufu. Through the creation of precise 3D models and immersive virtual representations, emerging 3D imaging platforms are utilized to enhance visitor experiences and preserve these sites. By employing qualitative and quantitative approaches, the research identifies both the benefits and challenges of leveraging technology in the Pyramids area. It underscores the crucial collaboration between graphic designers and archaeologists to develop effective mechanisms for innovation and preservation, ensuring the longevity of these invaluable cultural treasures.

Co-Publication: Urgent Inventory & Documentation of the elements of the ICH of Alexandria

This paper delves into the intersection of science, technology, and cultural heritage, particularly in the context of preserving Alexandria's rich intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Through the collaborative efforts of the Raquda Foundation for Art and Heritage and the Confederation of Egyptian European Business Associations (CEEBA), innovative inventorying and monitoring systems have been deployed to document and safeguard 51 ICH elements in Alexandria. This process not only addresses the challenges of time-consuming documentation but also ensures sustainable preservation and introduces heritage through diverse interpretation methods. By leveraging technology, this initiative underscores the importance of accessibility and the vital role it plays in safeguarding living heritage for future generations.
