Innovative ideas for urban organic waste recycling
B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
B.4.2: Reduce municipal waste generation, promote source-separated collection and its optimal exploitation, in particular its organic component
Waste treatment systems to optimise both services and life quality, stimulation of new investments, more efficient policy solutions and the inclusion of vulnerable social categories in each involved Country. The project aims to stimulate cities across Mediterranean Countries to look at opportunities that deal with cleaner technologies to face climate change, solving current waste concerns, valorising natural resources, increasing local employment and gather further investments. The idea is to work on the latest innovations to share different good practises across this network and adapt each solution to every partner’s need, based on their specific difficulties and/or unexploited potential.
It will be also crucial to define solutions that are reproducible. Our proposal wants to spark self-sustainable and long term plans beyond the project timeline.
- Reduce the volume of waste

- Reduce greenhouse emission

- Reduce transport costs (environmental and economic)

- Urban waste valorization

- Generate value-added products

- Involvement of vulnerable social categories
The development of this project will foster sustainable integrated urban development in cities across Mediterranean Countries, we focus on technologies that can be eco-friendly and applicable to different contexts and territories. This will improve the capacity to manage sustainable urban policies in every context and create new urban strategies and actions to integrate these new technologies among the inhabitants local habits. This approach enable cities to cooperate and develop integrated solutions to common urban challenges. This transnational cooperation can lead to a significant opening to new perspectives, know-how, technologies and even markets that they would have not considered before. As part of a network, each member will have roles, duties and advantages that will improve the level of its governance and the life quality of its inhabitants. A huge work shall be done to make effective changes on the administrative standards of most cities.
From an economical point of view, this network allows the birth of new expertise, new ecological good practices, local investments and employment, keeping an eye on increasing percentages of inclusion for certain disadvantaged social categories. The consequences of doing little or even nothing to address waste management can be very costly to society and to the economy overall

We are looking for partners interested in addressing environmental and social issues at the local level.
We plan to develop an applied part with small-medium scale plant for organic waste treatment, therefore municipalities or private entities that need to address waste issues are required.
In parallel, the project will be dedicated to research and development. Citizen education will be needed to reach a highly selected input material to the waste treatment system. After insect treatment, the system offers many different outcomes: fertilizer, frass, chitosan. This issues will be deepened with research institutes support.
