Med4Waste in Tunisia organises a round table on the role of the private sector in waste management
The Mediterranean region faces many challenges in waste management. One of the main challenges is the low recycling rate. Many countries in the region do not yet have effective recycling systems, resulting in a significant amount of waste going to landfills. Not only does this contribute to environmental degradation but also represents a missed opportunity to recover valuable resources from waste.
Many countries in the region face similar challenges such as the lack of resources to invest in modern waste management technologies and facilities, which limits the region's ability to manage its waste in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. In addition, there is the problem of illegal dumping and informal waste management practices. In some countries, informal waste pickers and collectors play an important role in waste management. While this can provide an income for those involved, it also presents environmental and health risks and undermines the development of formal waste management systems.
In this context, the Med4Waste project aims at facilitating new governance models for integrated and effective urban waste management policies in the Mediterranean region. Therefore, policymakers will find a platform to promote better governance in sustainable resource use and waste management, moving towards more sustainable consumption and production patterns at the Mediterranean level, while developing joint and common policy responses.
The event will take place in Tunis at the Laico Hotel, on the 2nd of May starting at 2 pm. It will include a round table discussion with several speakers, experts and specialists from civil society, local authorities, the private sector and the public sector.
It will aim at facilitating the exchange of information and knowledge between the different actors involved in waste management in the Mediterranean region, in order to promote an increased and effective participation of the private sector in waste management.
The event will also be an opportunity for BUSINESSMED to present its report on the business ecosystem promoting waste management and circular economy models in Mediterranean countries (Greece, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia). It will focus on the analysis of the concepts of resource-efficient and climate-friendly waste management systems. It also addresses how integrated circular economy solutions are incorporated into national and regional policy processes, and how business cooperation programmes are developed.
