LIVINGAGRO, field visit to permaculture project at Sharhabeel Research Station in Northern Jordan Valley enhances coperation between agroforestry stakeholders

In the framework of the LIVINGAGRO project field visits which were and are being implemented in all four project countries, on last 9th of May 2023 the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) organized a new field visit to permaculture project at Sharhabeel Research Station in Northern Jordan Valley. A group of researchers from the research institute, together with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, farmers and representatives from local environment associations took part in the visit with the aim of being informed and updated about the activities carried out since the start of the initiative. Moreoever, the field visit represented an occasion of knowledge and experiences exchange between different types and multilevel stakeholders of the Jordan agroforestry sector including researchers, farmers, extension agents and the local environment associations.

The day  began with a brief introduction to the LIVINGAGRO project by Dr. Salm Ayoub, Project Coordinator at NARC, after which a presentation was given by Eng. Yahya Abu-Sini, Coordinator of the permaculture project, in order to inform participants about the activities and achievements obtained at Sharhabeel Research Station concernig the initiative's objective to build resilient food systems to enhance food security through an extension of the permaculture activities and the introduction of innovations in the the Jordan Valley area.

An open discussion with the visit participants followed before they had the opportunity to learn about the key components of the permaculture project experiencing the adopted innovations related to water harvesting systems, natural buildings, waste management, renewable energy systems, animal raising systems, composting, aquaculture, forestry, food forests, nitrogen-fixing trees, pasture management and fodder crops, as well as the introduction of beehives in the project area.
