FruitFlyNet-ii develops smart applications against two fruit flies key-pests

FruitFlyNet-ii developed two smart applications based on the Location Aware System (LAS)  already explored in the frame of the project for e-monitoring and control the olive fly (Bactrocera oleae) and the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata)  key-pests. Precision Agriculture is used in the context of pests’ e-monitoring, and improvement of their control, leading to more accurate information and a better understanding of their spatiotemporal distribution. The two developments require farm digitization using either classical or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)  technologies, specific decision support systemd (DSS) for each fruit fly, to create spraying (or risk) maps and to make insecticidal treatments precise in time and space. Further, a module is developed, to guide the operator in the field during treatments as well as a web application that returns inputs and outputs to be visualized and managed.

In total, nine (9) Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) are conducted in this project in the frame of Living Labs. All the farm owners agree to run the current version of LAS against the olive fly and the Mediterranean fruit fly. They also express their willingness to enforce the Living Labs procedures already established by the MoUs after the end of the project. The large sites per partner are as follows:

  • UCO:          Olive site – Alcolea, Cordoba, Spain, approx. 25 ha, one (1) owner.
  • UNIMOL:   Olive site – Larino, Campobasso, Italy, approx. 25 ha, one (1) owner.

Med site (peaches) – CREA, Roma, Lasio,Italy, approx. 25 ha, Institutional.

  • LARI:          Olive site – Hasbaya, Lebanon, approx. 18 ha, 16 owners.
  • IO:              Olive site – Sfax, Tunisia, approx. 25 ha, Institutional.
  • CRRHAB:   Med site (peaches) - Mabrouka Nursery site at Khélidia, Naassem ZOZ4 Ben Arous, ~18 ha, one (1) owner.
  • AUA:         Olive site - Metamorphosi, Sykea, Lakonia prefecture, approx. 25 ha, Cooperative Union, (2nd cultivation period).

Med site (citrus) – Foiniki, Asopos, Lakonia prefecture, approx. 25 ha, six (6) owners, (2nd cultivation period).

Olive site Arkadiko, Argolis prefecture, approx. 25 ha, seventeen (17) owners, (1st cultivation period).

MED case (citrus) - Koutsopodi, Argolis prefecture, approx. 25 ha, six (6) owners, (1st cultivation period).

Note: For the 1st cultivation period the experiments started with the two (2) sites in Argolis prefecture,  however, due to fruitless productivity the sites were changed for the 2nd cultivation period to Lakonia prefecture.
