IES Bernat Guinovart high school has been selected as one of the schools managed by ESMES project partner in Spain, Consorci De La Ribera (CRIB), for its commitment to sustainability and energy saving. After the energy audit that was carried out, and according to the ESMES guidelines, the intervention consisted of three different but complementary actions:

  • The first and main one provided the BERNAT GUINOVART high school with a 20-kW photovoltaic power plant for self-consumption, as well as lithium batteries with a storage capacity of 15 kWh. The system is complete with its corresponding reading and monitoring application which provides direct solar and consumption data, allowing the system to be maximized in real time.
  • The second intervention focused on improving the energy efficiency of the center's lighting system, consisting of replacing 198 fluorescent and incandescent bulbs with equivalent LED technology bulbs connected to presence/motion detectors.
  • The third and last action focused on improving the efficiency of the sanitary hot water system and resulted in the replacement of the existing electric hot water accumulators for equivalent equipment with an aerothermal system.

All these actions have been aimed at reducing electricity consumption, which in 2019, when the project began, amounted to 56,174 kWh per year. The aim of these actions is both to reduce the school's energy consumption as much as possible and to cover most of its electricity demand with renewable energies. The system has just been put into service and is still in the test phase, so it is too early to assess its real impact, but preliminary studies indicate that with these three investments, the school could cover 60% of its demand. with renewable energies, in addition to reducing its energy consumption by 20%.

The IES BERNAT GUINOVART in Algemesí has become a reference in terms of sustainability and one of the most sustainable Valencian high school from an energy point of view.

Congratulations to the school!
