Mediterranean Biodiversity Protection tools catalogue in Arabic

In the framework of the Project PANACeA, the MED Biodiversity Protection Community built the present Catalogue of tools for biodiversity protection in Mediterranean MPAs, covering different needs and requirements for ecosystem-based management. This Catalogue is an update and extension of a previous report developed in the context of PANACeA, which included a preliminary version of some of the tools for ecosystem-based management in the Mediterranean, being developed by the Biodiversity Protection Community projects during the year 2018.
The tools included in this version of the Catalogue updated in 2022 are classified into several types: monitoring tools; management tools; geospatial tools; financial tools and other tools.
The tools catalogue is available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish.

This report summarises the findings of the national capitalisation event in Spain which focussed on management effectiveness on the Spanish coast.

Effective conservation of coastal habitats across the Mediterranean

A previous study within the ENSERES project showed that whereas PAs proved to be an effective tool to reduce land development along Mediterranean coastal areas, the ICZM Protocol had had no effect in doing so. This study aims to delve into those results by ascertaining the views of a range of relevant national and regional stakeholders on the
conservation status of Mediterranean coastal areas and the factors that most and least contribute to it.

Strategy and Action Plan for Sustainable Fisheries Management within and around Kneiss Islands Nature Reserve and SPAMI, Tunisia

The study, entitled "Development of a strategy and action plan for the sustainable management of fisheries in and around the Kneiss Islands nature reserve and SPAMI area in Tunisia", is part of the ENSERES (ENhancing Socio-Ecological RESilience in Mediterranean coastal areas) project.
This study involves the main players in the fisheries sector, namely the administration, fishermen's unions, civil society and self-employed fishermen. By adopting a participatory approach to drawing up the strategy, the aim is to involve all the stakeholders in the decision-making process, thereby ensuring the continuity of actions beyond the end of the project.

Synthesis of the results and lessons learnt of the ENSERES transfer activities

This report aims to document best practices and lessons learned from the implemented activities in the pilot territories, providing recommendations for further implementation and replication in other territories.
The transferring and up-scaling activities covered by the present report include compiling transferable tools into a multilingual toolkit, conducting training sessions on selected tools, implementing mentoring programmes in the pilot sites using appropriate tools, executing pilot actions by providing subgrants to civil society organizations and social and solidarity economy organizations, and improving marine protected areas management through the implementation of the twinning programme among the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance.

Guide pour la surveillance des dechets marins et l'amelioration de la gestion des dechets dans le port de peche de Sfax (Tunisie)

This deliverable summarizes the results of a support process (mentoring) on prevention of marine in the port of Sfax. It includes a monitoring plan adapted to the fishing port of Sfax and its specific features, and a plan for the sustainable management of waste from land-based activities and marine sources.
The report will make it possible to
- Establish a regular monitoring plan previously tested with all the players involved in order to identify the problems of marine waste in the port of Sfax (typology, quantity, etc.).
- Identify the most appropriate measures for the prevention and mitigation of marine pollution and develop the process for its implementation.
- Strengthen the capacities of stakeholders and decision-makers in Sfax with regard to monitoring and measures to improve waste prevention and management of waste in the port of Sfax.

Guidelines on the energy renovation of university buildings in the Mediterranean

Guidelines were developed and designed based on the main outputs of the project including the Living Lab approach adopted for the co-creation of the renovation process, the main results of the pilot actions implemented (energy generated and saved, CO2 emissions avoided, savings in €..), lessons learned and recommendations for replication and scaling-up.
These guidelines will facilitate the replication and scaling-up of the innovative renovation actions implemented, leading to a wider impact.

Decision aid tool for evaluation of optimal renovation measures in university buildings

A decision aid tool (Tool 1) is developed to support the energy management staff, in collaboration with students and researchers, in identifying and implementing the best options for building refurbishing and improving operation control for achieving significant energy savings, while maintaining the occupant's comfort.
A simplified tool (Tool 2) was also proposed for target groups with no advanced technical knowledge on building energy performance.
The interactive tools serve as a multi-objective decision models for the optimal ranking/trade-offs analysis between retrofit options, based on relevant decision criteria.

Cross-border Living Lab for the co-creation and co-innovation of university buildings renovations

The core concept of the Mediterranean Cross-border Living Lab (MCbLL) under the Med-EcoSuRe project is that working with stakeholders can produce more effective innovative solutions. Physical and virtual tools were developed to stimulate participatory processes, supporting university’ building managers with predictive tools and enhancing their capacity to plan and implement sustainable energy mix strategies and technologies in the different Mediterranean climatic contexts.
The MCbLL is an international network of people with knowledge and know-how on eco-solutions, connected through a platform and operating on local pilots, related to the renovations of university buildings in the Mediterranean area.

For the establishment and management of the Living Lab, the following was created:
- Guidelines for governance & management, Exploitation & valorisation of results (including different types of agreements)
- Guidelines on stakeholders’ management
- Action plans for Local Living Labs

A series of webinars was organized to launch MED beX.live (University Buildings as a Living Experience), the virtual counterpart of the Mediterranean Cross Border Living Lab (MCbLL).
Covering interconnected themes on eco-sustainable university renovations in the Med-Area investigated by the Med-EcoSuRe project, five webinars answered to the following questions:

- How to implement sustainable policies with a cost-effective approach for construction and building renovation?
- How to perform energy efficient renovation of school buildings and its integration into education programs and education environments?
- How may technology, especially BIM Methodology, accelerate growth and competitiveness in the building sector?
- How to implement the techno-economic assessment of on-grid solar PV systems?
- How can cost-effective energy efficiency and high-tech renewables take place in isolated zones/towns?
