CROSSDEV partner JUST – the Jordan University of Science and Technology – organised a 3-day training course on sustainable tourism, from June 20th to 22nd in Al Hemmah, Jordan. The fourth and last of the series, the training was attended by approximately 100 students from local schools and universities, raising awareness on the importance of sustainable tourism and its positive impact on the territory, as well as the crucial role of local communities in promoting a culture of sustainability and protecting available resources for future generations.

Dr. Ahmed Freewan, project manager for partner JUST, presented the project’s results and stressed the importance of sustainable tourism for the socioeconomic development of the territories. The training program included several activities:

  • Sustainability courses. They included topics such as the principles of sustainable tourism, development of local tourism products, service development in tourism, and tourism marketing. All courses covered aspects of sustainability and the developmental impact of tourism on local communities. The students received theoretical trainings from local academic specialists, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the sector. Additionally, the importance of networking between professionals in the sector to achieve sustainability goals was emphasised.
  • Field trips. The students were taken to experience new tourism products. The purpose of these trips was to connect theoretical frameworks with real-life observations of tourism projects in Umm Qais, northern Jordan, one of the Hidden Mediterranean destinations recently developed within CROSSDEV.
  • Workshop with practical volunteer work. This component aimed to educate and engage the students in contributing to CROSSDEV's efforts to develop sustainable tourism practices. The students had the chance to volunteer and work together with the communities of the area.
