RESMYLE in Jordan: subgrantees introduced new innovative ways for upcycling cloth, polystyrene, and plastic

In 2021, RESMYLE launched a competition to distribute grants for small organizations to raise awareness on sustainable development among young people and the general public. Let's know more about the Jordanian winners, Northern Gate Charity in partnership with Qwailebeh Institute for Training and Empowering Youth, with their "Participate, Disseminate and Collect to Win" project, which developed awareness-raising activities and resources.

The educational materials contained booklets and videos to present step-by-step tutorials on how to transform cloth, plastic, and polystyrene into usable products. The resources are aimed at capacity building on waste management, increasing awareness of sustainable development issues among the youth, and learning about the negative impacts of plastic and polystyrene as one the main sources of environmental pollution. On the practical side, the resources present new techniques to recycle these materials and transform old materials into new products to generate additional sources of income for the youth, especially for the females.

The materials were shared with community organizations and through public awareness campaigns which involved 35 young women and 49 young men.

Recycle your clothes and put a smile on kids’ faces

A public event was organized to present the first educational materials which introduce innovative ideas proposed by a young entrepreneur to transform old clothes into new products such as stationery cases, purses, and other types of clothing. The event hosted several young people who are not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET)s, a number of local community organizations, and school students. During the event, the young entrepreneur gave away stationary cases he made from recycled clothes to the kids who attended the event to show his gratitude to RESMYLE to give him the opportunity to share his ideas with the public.

Let’s save the environment and get some cash

The second educational materials were developed proposing a relatively larger production scale. It included tutorials on how to transform plastic and polystyrene into decorative products. The tutorial presented a step-by-step process to make a decorative fountain by recycling the polystyrene used in appliance packaging. The materials were shared with organizations that work with youth in  the city of Irbid.

These resources were developed thanks to a grant from the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), a partner in the RESMYLE project.
