The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), leader of PPI4MED, has presented more than 30 innovative technologies eligible for public procurement of innovation (PPI), an administrative tool to promote innovation aimed at boosting the development of new markets from the demand side (public procurers), through the instrument of public procurement of innovation. The solutions of interest proposed by the agency for public administrations include digital twins for heritage conservation, smart devices for monitoring water quality and an electric battery capable of powering a building.

CSIC’s Deputy Vice-Presidency for Knowledge Transfer (VATC) has used the organization's living lab to bring together public procurers, researchers, technology integrators and service providers. The aim is to address the needs arising in the fields of energy, historical heritage and infrastructures, biodiversity, circular economy, water and sea and ocean, medium-term challenges that concern society, but also governments and public administrations.

With the identification of the needs to be solved, the research carried out at the CSIC is a key factor in providing answers. The VATC is leading the design of a model of public procurement of innovation, based on some of the technologies that the CSIC has in its technology portfolio or even licensed to CSIC’s spin-off companies or other existing ones, something that strengthens the cross-cutting and collaborative nature of innovation.

After the three sessions of the CSIC living lab developed in this context, a phase of exploration of opportunities for public procurement of innovation among the participating agents has begun, which will allow the fulfillment of highly innovative projects in the technological areas presented.

Likewise, throughout 2023, new sessions of this laboratory of ideas will be held, with the objective of addressing other topics of interest to the public sector, as well as engaging new stakeholders and sharing actions, open to all companies and public entities that wish to join the initiative.
