Last November took place the 15th edition of MedaWeek Barcelona (Mediterranean Week of Economic Leaders), organised by ASCAME, active partner of the MAIA-TAQA project (ENI CBC MED Programme).  MedaWeek Barcelona is an iconic economic conference dedicated to promoting the Mediterranean worldwide and to endorsing the key economic sectors and the cultural values of this region. In this way, it serves as the main meeting point for voicing the interests of the private sector in the socio-economic development of the Mediterranean countries.

This year the highlight of MedaWeek was the 9th Mediterranean Green & Renewable Energy Summit. This session covered key sectors such as solar, wind, hydro and the circular economy to build a more sustainable and resilient Mediterranean.

Because the Mediterranean is one of the regions most affected by climate change, the need for sustainable growth becomes a must. With this aim, the Mediterranean Green & Renewable Energy summit provided a clear insight into the development of the renewable energy market in the region and showed its latest trends. It also called for a clearer policy framework and guidelines for the development of renewable energy and the strengthening of public-private collaboration.

Likewise, it was the right scenario to present the growth opportunities that the Mediterranean markets can offer, with investments of more than 90,000 million euros forecast up to 2030.  Thus, the potential of the region is considerable: it has a hydroelectric power system, wind resources and some of the highest solar radiation in the world. Technically, the region could be self-sufficient, covering its own energetic needs and even those of the rest of the world.

It is in this context that ASCAME's participation in the MAIA-TAQA project becomes especially relevant: MAIA-TAQA aims to create new resources efficient services (RES) on solar energy in Egypt and Jordan and on water management and the reuse of water in Lebanon. Therefore, the MAIA-TAQA project appreciates ASCAME’s initiative to make of MedaWeek Barcelona a platform to bring together regional and global solutions and technology providers to present cutting-edge innovative solutions that ensure clean and green energy, and to create synergies between authorities and companies to enhance the development of renewable energy projects.

This active involvement reveals ASCAME's commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth and its daily work to achieve long-term development, in line with the sustainability Agenda 2030, through the cooperation of a united Mediterranean. This is precisely, the cross-border cooperation spirit underlying the MAIA-TAQA project.
