Within the framework of MYSEA project, the University of Palermo (Italy), with the support of all partners, defined the research protocol and methodology to select 1000 youth NEETs and women and identify and close the skill gap by involving 50 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and 500 economic actors active in those sectors.
The Department of Agricultural, Food and Forest Sciences (SAAF) at the University of Palermo (UNIPA) is strongly committed to developing tools and methodologies to embed sustainability in the agri-food industry and promote investment in human capital. This is why the methodology was designed to tackle unemployment while addressing the skill mismatch and gender gap. To this end, the Department at the University of Palermo developed three questionnaires: the first is addressed to youth NEETs and women and identify characteristics, attitudes and intentions to work in the agri-food and waste management sectors. The second speaks to companies and determines the type of skills and knowledge needed in those sectors. The third targets TVET institutions and investigates the current training materials and topics.
MYSEA project, led by CIES Onlus (Italy), foresees oriented training on sector-oriented skills, transversal skills, digital skills and entrepreneurial skills.
These questionnaires will help us redefine the skills at hand, the skills needed in the agri-food and waste management industries and design training curricula to reduce the skills mismatch and gender gap.
The exchange of experience and good practices among partners was key to identify demographic, social and economic challenges to youth NEETs and women unemployment in Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Tunisia and Jordan.

*Maria Crescimanno is Full Professor of “Agricultural economics and valuation” at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Forest Sciences, University of Palermo (Italy, EU). She was the delegate of the Chancellor of the University of Palermo for the planning and organization of the University’s Masters, Coordinator of the PhD course in Agricultural Economics and Policy at the University of Palermo, and at present, she is coordinator of degree courses in agro-engineering and forest sciences at the University of Palermo, and Fellow of the EuroMed Academy of Business (EMRBI). Currently, she is the project manager of EnerNETMob project co-funded by the European Interreg Med program. Her research interests include international and European agricultural policy, foreign agri-food trade, agribusiness, market competitiveness, logistic, and fishery policy and market analysis. Her research has been published in many international peer-reviewed journals.
** Antonino Galati is Associate Professor of “Agricultural economics and valuation” at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Forest Sciences, University of Palermo (Italy, EU). He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economic and Policy (2007) from the University of Palermo and a Postgraduate Specialization Diploma in “Politique et choix publique en agriculture et alimentation (2005) from Institut Agronomique Méditerranéen de Montpellier, and is also the Italian country director of the EuroMed Academy of Business (EMRBI), fellow of the EMRBI and a Co-Chair of its Research Interest Committee in Agribusiness. He is the scientific officier of the EnerNETMob project co-funded by the European Interreg Med program. His research interests include stakeholder engagement in the agri-food sector, agribusiness, marketing strategies, management, logistics and market analysis. His research has been published in a wide range of international peer-reviewed journals.
