REUSEMED celebrates the first reuse festival in Capannori, Italy

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th of July the first 'Festival del Riuso' will be held In Capannori, Italy promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with Ascit and Centro di Ricerca rifiuti Zero (founder of Zero Waste Italy). The event will feature local associations and realities that deal with reuse in various sectors (furniture, clothes, books, food, IT materials) and environmentalist associations.

The event will take place at the Marlia market and will also propose creative workshops on the reuse of materials and moments of musical entertainment hosting bands playing with instruments made entirely from recycled materials. The Festival of Reuse is promoted in the context of REUSEMED, a project financed by the European Union within the ENI CBC Med Programme to encourage the reuse and repair of objects of which Capannori is a member together with several partners from Spain, Jordan and Tunisia.

During the Festival a dinner will also be offered thanks to the project "ConServe": when the agricultural producers of the territory generate surpluses or products that cannot be marketed as fresh products due to defects, ConServe recovers them, transforming them into quality products and feeding a solidarity chain, involving people with fewer opportunities, investing in their talents.

"Capannori has been characterised for more than 10 years by a consolidated tradition in the theme of re-use with the objective of preventing the production of waste and giving a second life to objects of various kinds," explains the Councillor for the environment, Giordano Del Chiaro. "In recent years there have been many experiences that have been developed in this sector dealing with various materials, from furniture to clothes, from food waste to computer equipment, anticipating what later became the European strategy of circular economy. With this festival we want to turn the spotlight on precisely these numerous and important re-use experiences, which will be present with their stands, also offering workshops, to enhance their activities and above all make them known to a wider public.

This event represents an important stage not only for REUSEMED, but also in the path we have undertaken to create a municipal reuse system that guarantees perfect coordination between all existing realities, supports them in enhancing the excellent results already achieved, and facilitates citizens' access to reuse circuits by giving them a unified point of reference. Among the next steps,' continues Del Chiaro, 'there will be the establishment of a dedicated information point where citizens can find out where they can dispose of the various objects and materials intended for reuse, and the creation of a map of reuse sites to promote the many existing possibilities for giving objects a second life, leading to the creation of a true 'Citadel of reuse'. A path that we are implementing in collaboration with the Zero Waste Research Centre and Ascit with the objective of making Capannori the European 'capital' of re-use."
