Plastic Busters Cap organized in Tunisia the national training on marine litter monitoring and mitigation measures

Two days of training course full of practical experiences on several marine litter monitoring and mitigation techniques: the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies - Department of Marine Environment, in cooperation with the University of Siena, Department of Physical Earth and Environmental Sciences, organized in Bizerte, Tunisia, the national training on the 2nd and 3rd of November.

The training aimed to build the capacity of project managers and stakeholders on how to design and conduct marine litter monitoring programmes on beaches and at sea and how to select and implement prevention and mitigation measures.

During this practical and highly interactive training, participants were familiarised with methodologies and different scientific approaches to monitor, assess, preventing and mitigate marine litter on beaches, sea surface and in biota.

The training also included fieldwork and practical workshops, such as

-Monitoring of macro and micro litter on the sea surface;

-Analysis of microplastic samples collected by the Manta net.

-Analysis of marine litter in fish and invertebrates species

-Analysis of macro and micro litter on beaches.

This two-day training course closed with a certificate awarding ceremony at the fishing school of Ghar El Meleh, Bizerte.

 

Plastic Busters Cap project was initiated under the aegis of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) "Plastic Busters Initiative" and the Mediterranean Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN MED) led by the University of Siena (Italy), with a budget of 1.1 million euros and co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the ENI CBC Med programme.
