MEDISS increases dissemination of best practices on water efficiency and climate change mitigation

Prati Smart project delegation from Emilia Romagna visits the MEDISS pilot plant in Arborea

The Region of Emilia Romagna supports the development of Innovation Plans aimed at optimizing products, processes, services, practices and technologies designed to make water use in agriculture more efficient and rational.

With the Innovation Plan Prati Smart - funded by the EU RDP 2014-2020 - Emilia-Romagna intends to promote the efficient use of water resources on the polyphytic stable meadows in the Enza Valley area, which are typically irrigated by the run-off method with surface water derived from the Enza stream or groundwater from wells.

However, today this system suffers from major critical issues, such as high water use combined with low efficiency, which have become increasingly binding as climate change and contraction of stream water availability become more substantial.

On farms operating in the Parmigiano Reggiano production system in the high plain area, automatic irrigation water management systems will be tested, ensuring the supply of correct irrigation volumes.

From this focus on innovation in water resource management in areas with a strong agricultural vocation in cattle breeding and dairy production came the interest in the actions and results of MEDISS in Arborea and the role of ENAS in driving innovation.

Thanks Prati.Smart for your visit!
