Jordan: BEEP team informs local stakeholders about innovative methodologies in the renovation of historic buildings

Under the framework of the EU- ENI CBC MED – BEEP project the "Royal Scientific Society (RSS)" and the "National Energy Research Centre (NERC)" together with the “Sterling BIM Company” organized the technical workshop “BIM for Energy Efficiency in the Public Sector” on the 3rd of August 2021.

The workshop focused on informing attendees about the benefits of the BIM methodology for the energy renovation of buildings. Even though BIM generally applies to new build projects, BIM also supports the renovation, refurbishment and maintenance of the built environment. As an example of application in a real building, the Jordanian team is working on the energy rehabilitation of the “Municipal Guest House of Al Karak Municipality”.

Last June, the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and the National Energy Research Centre (NERC) signed an agreement with the Sterling company to develop a virtual model by using the Heritage Building Information Modelling (H-BIM) process for this building.

Representatives from different institutions, ministries & local municipalities attended the workshop and were briefed on the progress that Sterling is making on the H-BIM model that will represent the constructive system and technological characteristics of the “Municipal Guest House” (vertical and horizontal structural system, materials and energy performance of the Building).

About the BEEP project:

BEEP project aims at strengthening the use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. The testing of this emerging technology on built heritage will be performed to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock. The project will provide public administrations with a powerful method for the energy rehabilitation of public buildings to be supported with private funds through the Energy Performance Contracting (*). The project main outcome will be an innovative methodology based on the integration of emerging technologies tested on 9 heritage public buildings located in Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, and Egypt.

(*) Energy performance contracting (EPC) is a mechanism for organising the energy efficiency financing. The EPC involves an Energy Service Company (ESCO) which provides various services, such as finances and guaranteed energy savings. The remuneration of the ESCO depends on the achievement of the guaranteed savings. The ESCO stays involved in the measurement and verification process for the energy savings in the repayment period. ESCO and energy performance contracting are mostly found in the public sector and to a lesser extent in the industrial and commercial building sectors (Hilke and Ryan, 2012).
