Creating opportunities and promoting social inclusion in a rather difficult historical period is the great challenge that HELIOS is facing in all the territories involved in the project. Even more in the Gaza Strip, HELIOS acts to offer opportunities for unemployed young people and women.

The main mission of HELIOS project is to do it in Mediterranean region through the Blue and Circular Economy channels.

About 170 young people and women participating in the 6 training groups of the HELIOS courses distributed in the University College of Applied Sciences-UCAS’s two main branches in Gaza and Khan Younis, visited the Gaza’s seaport, Al Bahar (the fish farm), Azolla plantation farms in Beit Lahiya and the Maritime Museum of the General Administration of Fisheries.

The visits aimed to highlight the Palestinian fishing sector as one of the most important economic sectors that employ a large number of fishermen.

Participants became aware about the extent of pollution caused by the waste of fishing boats and the non-compliance with environmental laws that support the preservation of the marine environment. In addition, the visits highlighted the main and future challenges faced and that will be faced by hundreds of people who work in professions related to fishing (e.g. fishmongers, mechanics, electricians, boat builders, etc).

The training of the Palestinian participants will continue in the next weeks in order to provide them with hard, soft and green skills oriented towards specific needs of the Blue and Circular Economy sectors in the labour market, based on direct interaction with local enterprises.
