In follow-up to the Opinion Article that was issued by Integrated Resources Management Company Ltd (IRMCo), Malta which targeted the democratization of spatial planning decision in the water and sanitation sector, this latest opinion piece introduces the project’s ambition to develop a WebGIS as a decision-support tool towards the drawing up of optimum wastewater reuse action plans, which is available for download in English, French and Arabic.

Ioannis Manakos and Rizos Chadoulis, from the Information Technologies Institute (ITI) within the Centre for Research and Technology, Hellas (CERTH), explain how the WebGIS will be built solely on open-source tools and technologies, thus ensuring that third party developers will be able to build further solutions on top of this new tool.

Pedro Simon Andreu, from the Regional Entity for Wastewater Sanitation and Treatment in Murcia, (ESAMUR), Spain reflects on the microbiological quality requirements for treated wastewater reuse in agriculture which are brought in by a recently introduced EU legislation.

Dirk De Ketelaere and Anna Spiteri, from Integrated Resources Management Company Ltd (IRMCo), inform about the forthcoming stakeholder workshops that will be aimed at first collecting ‘bottom up’ inputs from the local communities around the 3 pilot demonstration sites of AQUACYCLE’s eco-innovative wastewater treatment technology. The WebGIS will then permit to come up with the most cost-efficient action plans for wastewater reuse and eventually presented to decision- and policy-makers in the respective counties in a final series of stakeholder events.
