ENI CBC Med Programme participates in first-ever “Mediterranean Pavilion” at United Nations’ Climate Change Conference ‘COP27’ in Egypt

We are delighted to announce that the ENI CBC Med Programme will be part of the “Mediterranean Pavilion”, the first of its kind to be implemented in the history of the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference “COP”. Throughout the two weeks of the COP27 - 6-18 Nov, 2022 - in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, the Mediterranean Pavilion will host numerous activities and events in view of highlighting both the urgent challenges the region faces, and the innovative solutions already being developed, eventually raising awareness on a region overlooked in the climate negotiations.

Located in the COP27 Blue Zone, the Mediterranean Pavilion led by Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), the PRIMA Foundation (Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area” Programme), and United Nations Environment Programme - Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP-MAP), has been conceived as coalition of like-minded organisations dealing with climate change in the region, including among others the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), the Interreg MED Programme, Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, OMC Med Energy Conference & Exhibition, Plan Bleu, MedWaves, Ecomondo, etc.

As partner of the Mediterranean Pavilion, the ENI CBC Med Programme will be present in Sharm el-Sheik to share with the global environmental leaders and community cooperation opportunities as well as innovative and scalable solutions implemented under funded projects. In particular, the ENI CBC Med is organising three events gathering project partners and experts, according to the following calendar:

  • Accelerating the green transition in the Mediterranean: spotlight on funding opportunities - WATCH LIVE STEAMING

Date and hour: 9/11/2022 from 16.15 to 17.15 Egypt local time (starting at 15.15 CET)
Brief description: Discover the priorities and funding - over €650 million - available under three EU programmes, namely Interreg NEXT MED, Interreg Euro-MED and PRIMA, to support cooperation projects aiming at delivering the green transition in the Mediterranean area.

  • Untapping the potential of wastewater reuse and use of non-conventional water resources to address the water challenge in the Mediterranean region - WATCH LIVE STREAMING 

Date and hour: 11/11/2022 from 16.15 to 17.15 Egypt local time (starting at 15.15 CET)
Brief description: Reuse of treated wastewater and use of non-conventional water resources can offer alternative water supplies for agricultural and domestic uses to cope water scarcity. Join the event to discover successful experiences implemented under ENI CBC Med, including NAWAMED, MENAWARA and MEDWAYCAP projects.

Brief description: SMEs have a key role to play in the shift towards a more sustainable future. The event will look at solutions and projects connected to the ENI CBC MED Programme that promote green business models and circular economy principles, including BESTMEDGRAPE, INVESTMED, GIMED, STAND Up!, etc. Please note that the keynote address will be delivered H.E Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, Arab Republic of Egypt.

Brief description: Organised by the Interreg MED Sustainable Tourism Community, the debate will mainly stress on the urgent need to decarbonise the tourism sector that in the next 20 years will represent 10% of global CO2 emissions. Event to feature Co-Evolve4BG project.

  • Alignment and contribution of agrifood business to climate change adaptation and mitigation strategy and green circular economy - WATCH LIVE STREAMING

Date and hour: 12/11/2022 from 10.00 to 11.00 (Egypt local time - EET, corresponding to CET+1)
Brief description: Organised by the PRIMA programme, the seminar will investigate the models and systems to measure the impact of agrifood production on the environment and on nutrition, taking into consideration the risks that inadequate measurement systems can endanger traditional Mediterranean production and value chains. ENI CBC Med Programme will be represented by Dr. Khaled ElSaadany, senior project officer on innovation and technology transfer at the Joint Technical Secretariat.

  • Mediterranean biodiversity challenges: acting against marine litter

Date and hour: 16/11/2022 from 12.30 to 13.30 (Egypt local time - EET, corresponding to CET+1)
Brief description: Organised by the Interreg MED Biodiversity Protection Community, the event will look into ongoing efforts to address the impacts of marine litter on Mediterranean ecosystems. Event to feature COMMON and ENSERES projects.

  • Sustainable Blue Economy in the Mediterranean – A rising tide which lifts all boats / WATCH LIVE STREAMING

Date and hour: 17/11/2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 (Egypt local time - EET, corresponding to CET+1)
Brief description; Organised by the Union for the Mediterranean, this event will bring together a small but exemplary representation of the large and dynamic Mediterranean Sustainable Blue Economy Community, highlighting key initiatives and projects relevant to capacity building, research, innovation, investments, etc. A representative of the Managing Authority will detail the approach of the ENI CBC Med Programme on the topic of blue economy.
