Barcelona, 9 October 2023 - In the heart of Barcelona, in the Hotel Museo Petit Palace, a chapter of what has been one of the most emblematic projects of these times was closed: ARTOLIO ENI CBC MED. For three years, this project has been the pillar that has sustained the improvement in the production of extra virgin olive oil, in a global context that has presented countless challenges.

The effort and dedication of all ARTOLIO participants was felt during the closing meeting. Despite the challenges, the first day was marked by a clear objective: to report accurately to the European Neighbourhood Instrument (ENI) on all the achievements and progress made. No detail was left to chance and work was carried out with admirable thoroughness.

But it was not all about looking back. During the following days, the focus was on the future of ARTOLIO. A novelty that took centre stage was the presentation of the new ARTOLIO platform, designed as a meeting point for farmers, where they can showcase their products and connect with consumers. In an increasingly digitalised world, such platforms are vital for the farming community.

The environmental challenge, especially for olive groves, has been one of the biggest hurdles they have faced. But the resilience of the farmers has been unwavering, proving that, with hard work and dedication, a quality product can be obtained even in adverse conditions.

Katerina Roumelioti, Head of Europe Direct Central Macedonia, said: "Our ability to adapt and find solutions, even in difficult times, is a testament to the strength of our partnership.

The international and collaborative nature of the project became even more evident, where the visit and tasting of other aoves such as D.O. Siurana allowed for a broader and European vision of the product, and reflected how, even in adverse circumstances, there can be unity and joint work, as in the case of the Palestinians and Israelis.

The start of the ARTOLIO project in the midst of global confinement already foreshadowed a challenging path. However, ARTOLIO has stood firm and has become a symbol of resilience, determination and collaboration.

Global challenges such as drought, high prices and tensions in the Middle East reinforce the importance of projects like ARTOLIO. More than ever, it is essential to continue working towards bringing the peoples of the Mediterranean together and towards sustainable and equitable agricultural development.

ARTOLIO's experience shows us that, even in uncertain times, collaboration and determination can open the way to a better future.
