The Cyprus Institute, Cypriot parnter of BEEP, in collaboration with Nicosia Municipality, invites Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) in Cyprus to express their interest in engaging in the development of an Energy Performance Contract (EPC) for the pilot case building in Nicosia. 

The selected pilot building located just outside the Venetian walls in Nicosia, used to host the club of the British Cavalry, later serving as the barracks of the Danish Canadian military detachment in Cyprus. The building was abandoned after the Danish Canadian military force left the island and has degenerated. Given its architectural, historic, and social value, the building has been proposed by its owner, the Municipality of Nicosia, to house a new service, e.g., a museum. The proposed design intervention, suggested by the owner, involves the restoration of the existing building, as well as the construction of additional spaces. The deep renovation of the building would also incorporate renewable energy systems, particularly photovoltaic panels, to be implemented on a separate structure, respecting the architectural and historic integrity of the building.

The building documentation, a 3D model and dynamic energy simulation of the pilot building employed Building Information Modeling (BIM) tools, and all studies are in an advanced level of maturity. Relevant documentation, such as architectural, structural and electro-mechanical studies, management plan, estimated schedules for systems, equipment, occupancy, etc. are available upon request. 

The use of BIM to pursue energy efficiency (EE) in buildings is an emerging technology and the test on built heritage (EE-HBIM) is necessary to demonstrate its scalability to the entire building stock. The EE-HBIM approach will provide Public Administrations with a powerful method for the energy rehabilitation of public buildings, from the analyses to the financial plans, to be supported with private funds through the EPC. The adoption of BIM tools in the energy efficiency of existing buildings in Cyprus are lacking behind other EU countries and thus BEEP project seeks for local key stakeholders’ support to drive its implementation process and overcome the barriers.

(*) Energy performance contracting (EPC) is a mechanism for organising the energy efficiency financing. The EPC involves an Energy Service Company (ESCO) which provides various services, such as finances and guaranteed energy savings. The remuneration of the ESCO depends on the achievement of the guaranteed savings. The ESCO stays involved in the measurement and verification process for the energy savings in the repayment period. ESCO and energy performance contracting are mostly found in the public sector and to a lesser extent in the industrial and commercial building sectors (Hilke and Ryan, 2012).
