The Mediterranean is considered a climate change hotspot: the region is warming 20% faster than the global average with severe consequences such as increasing desertification, soil degradation, loss of biodiversity and scarcity of water resources. These threats are jeopardising the agri-food sector, a vital industry for millions of people and hundreds of thousands small businesses across the Mediterranean region. The war in Ukraine, and related tensions on global agricultural markets due to a rise in commodity prices, is highlighting the strategic importance of achieving a resilient agri-food sector to ensure food security as well as food affordability. While the agri-food sector has the potential to become a bridge between the two shores of the Mediterranean, most agri-food stakeholders still look at each other mainly as mere competitors.

In order to show that cooperation beyond competition is not only possible, but also necessary, the ENI CBC Med Programme, together with the Spanish Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Finance (both responsible for the ENI CBC Med Programme in Spain) and the Region of Valencia, are organizing the online event “The agri-food industry beyond competition: stories of Mediterranean cooperation and debate on the main challenges of the sector”, that will take place next 20th of July from 10 AM to 1 PM CEST (Rome time).

Participants will have the opportunity to hear the views and insights of institutional representatives and experts of the agriculture and cooperation sectors, such as Ms. Mireia Mollà Herrera, Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition of the Region of Valencia (Generalitat Valenciana), Ms. María Carmen Hernández Martín, General Vice-director of European Territorial Cooperation (Ministry of Finance and Civil Service, Spain), and Mr. Vicente Domingo, Director for the World Sustainable Urban Food Center of Valencia (CEMAS, a joint initiative between United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture and the city of Valencia). 

The event will showcase successful cooperation stories implemented under ENI CBC Med projects, namely InnovAgroWoMed, MedSNAIL and ORGANIC ECOSYSTEM. 

Moreoever, the event will feature the voice of Mediterranean young people who will share their views on the challenges related to the agri-food sector and debate with two experts from Spain and Tunisia. 

Finally, funding opportunities for cooperation projects in the agri-food sector under the future Interreg NEXT MED Programme will be outlined.
