WEF-CAP: white papers - Jordan, Egypt, Tunisia

The WEF-CAP project tries to support sustainable and resilient agri-food sector production, thus improving the energy and water efficiency: renewables, wastewater treatment, water harvesting and reuse, etc.
Successful technologies in Water -Energy - Food Nexus (WEFN) integrated approach have been analysed and catalogued. In this section there are 3 white papers which demonstrates the importance of adopting this integrated approach and in particular analyze the cases of some partner countries of the project: Jordan, Egypt and Tunisia.

WEF-CAP: policy briefs

WEF-CAP project seeks to consolidate a water, energy, and food regional meta cluster that fosters cooperation and tech-transfer while mainstreaming policy impact for innovation-driven growth.
In this section there are 3 policy briefs related to Water, Energy and Food Nexus (WEFN):

ESMES Case studies on REEE project portfolio solutions for enhanced energy rehabilitation of school buildings

As part of the ESMES project, aimed at contributing to greater awareness and better energy habits in schools, some case studies were carried out on portfolio solutions of renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) projects for better energy rehabilitation of school buildings. In particular, Italy based its case study on schools involvement, Tunisia on policy and financial support for REEE rehabilitations, Jordan on the Monitoring Driven Rehabilitations. The final beneficiaries of the case studies are the public institutions that will use them to strengthen the capacity to implement energy retrofits based on REEE solutions, and energy professionals to develop competencies and expand networks for REEE project solutions.

ESMES approved strategy to support efficient and cost-effective energy mix in public school buildings

The following documents provide some strategies (tested in Italy, Jordan, Spain, Tunisia) to support an efficient and cost-effective energy mix in public school buildings, through pilot actions based on monitoring renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE). The reports highlight: energy mix adapted to target areas and based on local renewable energy sources; possible sources of financing; the importance of reallocating cuts in energy spending obtained through REEE solutions towards a broader improvement in the energy performance of public real estate. Each strategy focuses on the specific national context and is approved by the relevant institutions.

ESMES Cross-border work on best practices on energy policies and rehabilitations management in schools

ESMES (Energy Smart Mediterranean Schools Network) project focused on the optimisation of energy consumption in public schools through innovative, monitoring-based renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) pilot actions. The project tried to improve the capacity of 5 public institutions in order to implement innovative energy rehabilitations.
The following document illustrates a cross-border work on best practices on energy policies and rehabilitations management in schools. Each partner (in Italy, Jordan, Spain, Tunisia, Lebanon) with support of the National Energy Hub, reviewed current policies, procedures, strategies for rehabilitations management in its country.

ESMES Administrative procedures for students, teachers and school staff

The energy trends in the Mediterranean region are characterised by the growing demand for energy, fossil fuels dependence, high CO2 emissions, etc., with negative consequences on the environment. Buildings are responsible for a significant part of the total energy consumption.
This document presents an administrative procedure for students, teachers and school staff. Building users may play important role in improving energy management in their buildings, when encouraged and motivated properly. This is especially relevant for schools, where there are many "permanent" users, including teachers, pupils and staff. Their combined efforts can bring results that may be difficult to achieve in other types of buildings. There are different methods for involving building users in energy management processes and changing their behaviours. In each case, the process should start with adequate information and education to give context and theoretical background to practical activities.

ESMES Investment Planning Procedure

ESMES project focused on the optimisation of energy consumption in public schools through innovative, monitoring-based renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE) pilot actions. The project is being implemented in five Mediterranean countries (Italy, Jordan, Spain, Tunisia, Lebanon) involving six organisations.
One of ESMES outputs delivered in this report is an investment planning procedure for public institutions to shift from single-building rehabilitation to the distributed interventions approach, maximizing energy performance for the amount invested, targeting energy consumption intensive components in multiple buildings taking into account national regulations and peculiarities to ease integration of new procedures into existing ones.

MAIA TAQA Detailed design of the pilot project - Amman

The MAIA-TAQA project focuses on developing and defining a range of innovative services in the field of resource efficiency (RE), by setting up demonstrators in 3 Mediterranean pilot areas, in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. This report illustrates a pilot project implemented in Jordan with the aim of improving and upgrading the provision of power at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JOCC) main building in Amman by installing a Building Integrated Photovoltaic System (BIPV).

MAIA TAQA Detailed design of the pilot project - Lebanon

MAIA-TAQA has implemented demonstrator pilot projects in Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan, which have significantly advanced the cause of sustainability and resource efficiency within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mediterranean countries. This report provides the main features of the detail design of the Lebanese pilot project in the framework of Work Package 3 (WP3) - "Development of sustainable services in the Mediterranean area".
The pilot project in Lebanon consisted of a construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant for the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) building, and the reuse of the treated water for irrigation purposes, with the objective to fulfill the following priorities:
- Efficient system with the best quality for price ratio
- Innovative technology for treatment, monitoring of treated water &
valorisation of sludge
- Large potential of application in local context

MAIA TAQA Final Report

The MAIA-TAQA project, focused on developing and defining a range of innovative services in the field of resource efficiency (RE), has significantly advanced the cause of sustainability and resource efficiency within Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) across the Mediterranean countries and it has successfully executed demonstrator pilot projects in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. The achievements of these pilot projects have been showcased through various impactful initiatives. This final report illustrates the Pilot Implementation Analysis, the impact on innovative Resource Efficiency solutions (capacity building, the Innovation One Stop Shop initiative, B2B events), highlighting the challenges and lessons learned.

MAIA-TAQA Resources Efficiency Market Assessment Report

The MAIA-TAQA project focuses on developing and defining a range of innovative services in the field of resource efficiency (RE), by setting up demonstrators in 3 Mediterranean pilot areas, in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. The "Resources efficiency market assessment report" provides a comprehensive overview on the selected RE services in each pilot country, the RE market situation, the RE production state, the distribution methods, the incentive and financing methods, the challenges and barriers facing the RE services implementation and the RE prospects. The data collected and analysed show that there are significant opportunities in the three pilot countries for the development of these services. The study also shows the governments’ efforts in supporting the services through different incentives and financing mechanisms, in addition to the challenges and barriers that need to be taken into consideration to develop a well-established RE eco-system.

MedArtSal - Interest and attitude towards salt-related tourism experiences in salinas: a demand - side study in Italy

In the framework of MedArtSal project, a study was carried out to explore Italians' interest in the preferred types of salt-related tourism activities and experiences that salinas might implement to diversify their business by entering the tourism and hospitality sector. This document illustrates the methodology of the study and its findings, which provide useful information to salinas manager, policymakers, destination marketers and tourism stakeholders being somehow interested in boosting their positioning in the salt-related tourism market, a market that seems to be still in its quite early stage in Italy (as shown by the huge number of respondents that have never visited salinas).
