Lebanon is facing multiple waste crisis and is lacking a legal framework and also infrastructure to deal with e-waste and batteries. Lead batteries are mostly handled by scavengers with unsustainable practices. With the important development of PV, Lebanon should soon be facing an issue with the management of the waste related to these installations. The logic underpinning the Action, is to intervene directly with public sites whose PV installations need repair to rehabilitate them and build a pilot disposal chain to recycle or reuse batteries from cars and energy installation.
The project aims to give an answer to the lack of proper disposal chain for batteries with the establishment of an environmentally safe value chain, including reusing and recycling, and which should be compliant with the Basel convention guidelines. Advocacy actions will be conducted to work on the regulatory framework and help Lebanon adopt the right scheme for the disposal of batteries. In parallel, the project will seek to play on the behavior of energy installation owners, car manufacturers and battery providers to introduce repair and recycling habits: an assessment will help defining usage that can be developed for battery 2nd life applications.
Lead batteries are mostly handled by scavengers with unsustainable practices. With the important development of PV, it is more lead batteries that are sent to the scavengers already dealing with car batteries. The logic underpinning the Action is guided by the following steps:
- Direct intervention with entities already concerned by the environment issue of mismanagement of lead batteries. This will allow to build a pilot for the storage and export of lead batteries.
- Get a feasibility study for the management of lead batteries
- Conduct an environmental assessment for the disposal of lead batteries
- Assessment of the capacity of lead and lithium batteries for second working application
- 2nd life application pilot on public buildings
- Advocacy work with the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of water and energy to design a legal framework
