The municipality of Sakiet Ezzit in Sfax (eastern Tunisia) and the National Waste Management Agency of Tunisia (ANGED), both partners of REUSEMED project, have started working on the design of the reuse circuits that will be built in the country within the framework of REUSEMED project. Specifically, in the last month they have carried out the research and analysis phase to identify the needs of the population and the demands of the economic and social agents involved in the project.

As part of the analysis work, both Tunisian partners have conducted a survey to assess the level of knowledge of the inhabitants of Sakiet Ezzit on reuse and to know their suggestions to design new waste management projects based on them. Based on the survey results, the eight types of waste that will be reused in the new circuits in the region have been identified: clothes, toys, food, coffee grounds, computer equipment, books and papers, and banners and batteries.

In addition, representatives of the municipality of Sakiet Ezzit, in collaboration with ANGED, held, throughout February and March, the first co-design meetings with local stakeholders, associations, students and members of civil society in order to shape reuse circuits that will cover the entire reuse cycle, from waste collection to the redistribution of products.

Finally, as the REUSEMED project pays special attention to food composting, the Tunisian partners will host a major composting event on March 30. At this event, food composting experts will explain to the attendees the key aspects of the process and how it can be carried on at each neighbourhood.

REUSEMED proposes to create municipal networks based on reuse circuits for home appliances, furniture, books, clothes, Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment and food. To set up the networks, 4 cities in Spain, Italy, Jordan and Tunisia will design and test composting installations, food collection points in markets, repair and reuse centers, reuse corners in shops and repairing cafes.
