According to the United Nations, “women play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of rural households and communities, improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing. […] They make significant contributions to agricultural production, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management, and building climate resilience.” Yet, women in rural areas suffer more from gender inequality, exclusion and sometimes poverty than those in urban areas. With an estimated 30% of women’s labour force participation - compared to 70% for men - the Mediterranean region has still a long way to go to ensure more inclusive labour markets. According to UN Women, the COVID-19 is expected to worsen the situation, resulting “in the loss of 1.7 million jobs in the Arab region, including approximately 700,000 jobs held by women”, with rural women more affected than those living in urban areas.

Women play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of rural households and communities, improving rural livelihoods and overall wellbeing.

The objective of the webinar “Unleashing the potential of Mediterranean women in rural areas: constraints and solutions in the COVID-19 era” to take place on 15th of October is to analyse the situation of employment of rural women in the Mediterranean, discuss the main constraints for rural women to reach the labour market and highlight solutions and good practices that can bolster the inclusion of women in economic life. A selection of opportunities from the ENI CBC Med projects for women in terms of training, employment and business creation will be presented.

The webinar will bring the point of view speakers from both sides of the Mediterranean, including experts, academics, project managers and women from rural areas. The event will be introduced by a representative of the Union for the Mediterranean which has recently launched a Mediterranean-wide mechanism to monitor the progress on gender equality. Organisations such as the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Montpellier (CIHEAM IAM), the Association of Cooperation for Peace (ACPP), the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR) and the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" will participate in the event.
