Turning the Crisis into an Opportunity - Rethinking Growth
COVID-19 has supended the lives of EU citizens and businesses dramatically in unprecedented ways. As cities started lifting containment measures and thinking ahead, there is mounting will for a new start. As it happens with every crisis, crisis also creates new opportunities such as innovations that are emerging to save lives and protect livelihoods. A new recovery should not necessarily bring people and economy back to normal but could become an opportunity to build a better future.
To help cities prepare well-thought and efficient post-crisis recovery plans, the European Commission’s Intelligent Cities Challenge organises the next COVID-19 webinar to support mutual learning, share best practices and support city administrations on effective city initiatives from European and global cities.
During this event, we will explore effective city plans through expert perspectives, sound city initiatives and open discussion. Topics to be discussed include localising food and supply chains, local green and digital recovery plans, creating circular economies, building sustainable urban food systems and the use of technologies, digital platforms and data commons as enablers of de-containment and new growth.
Intelligent Cities Challenge
The Intelligent Cities Challenge is a support programme that will help 100 EU cities use advanced technologies to support sustainable growth and improve the quality of life in urban areas. Ulla Engelmann, Head of unit for Social Economy, European Commission, DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs;
Damiano Cerrone, consultant on Urban Transformation from Demos Helsinki think tank, on navigating and shaping the post pandemic world with a focus on localising supply chains, the use of technologies, digital platforms and data commons;
Prof. Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, co-chair on International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems, who will present the latest developments on sustainable urban food systems;
Piero Pellizzaro, Chief Resilience Officer of Milan, to present Milan’s recovery plan;
A high-level expert from Singapore’s Centre of Liveable Cities, who will present reflections on recovery (health, social and economic) at the local level and the tools/technologies used (e.g. TraceTogether application) for contact tracing.
