Management of water salinity in Mediterranean is strongly needed to benefit from significant water sources with low quality especially high salinity.
Improving quality of available high salinity water sources will provide multiple benefits to county limited water sources.
One valuable benefit is reducing demand on high quality water that was normally used for irrigation to be used for higher value uses.
Another benefit is treatment of drainage water before disposal which protects soil and water bodies from contamination.
The salinity problem is recognized in desert regions , however, practical actions are rarely studied and quantified.
Many farms have been abandoned due to uncareful use of low quality water . Thus, the livelihood of the farmers and productivity of land is threatened by salinity. Yields are gradually decreasing on the farms, which are still under cultivation and this problem has now become so acute to reduce productivity of farms with time. However, the end result is nearing rapidly. Since no recent data is available which can show the extent of present salinity and the losses occurring to the agriculture of the country.
Appropriate solutions which are environmentally sustainable were to be identified and promoted. There was need to utilize land and water resources of the country that are of marginal quality.
1- Design and Building several configurations of solar still systems with solar concentrators, solar heaters , and isolated walls based on best practices reported on recent research
2- Monitor solar still units performance using several indicators.
3- Recommendation of best practices learned to be implemented in Midetearreanian climate and desert regions.
Research Results are
1- Suggest a design of high efficiency solar still unit with realistic data obtained in the field.
2- Run pilot scale test at farm levels in north and south Mediterranean countries
3- Provide a solid information background to researchers to guide future research
