ECOAQUA aims at advancing the use of non-conventional water resources (NCWRs), mainly storm water harvesting and grey water reuse, improved by innovative techniques and methods, in water scarce communities in Abasan Al-Kabira and its surrounding, as a cost effective method for enhancing water availability, addressing current and future water scarcity challenges at local level
The ECOAQUA Programme’s objectives are:
• To improve sustainable integrated management of non-conventional water resources and especially rainwater harvesting and grey water reuse, as cost effective methods for water availability and climate change adaptation in the water scarce in Abasan Al-Kabira and its surrounding.
• To support the Municipality of Abasan Al-Kabira in the water sector Sustainable Development Goals, aligned with their SDIP Action Plan in view of their vision for the Abasan Al-Kabira to become an eco-city by 2020.
• To contribute to the development of the National Water Management Plan for the Palestinian Water Authority
• To enhance the capacity of the local authorities to manage NCWR
• To educate students and teachers on NCWR and increase awareness on sustainable water use
• To promote multi-stakeholder partnerships for local NCWR initiatives
• To advance the use of NCWR, as a sustainable, innovative and cost-effective way of improving community access to water in water scarce areas, thereby contributing to climate adaptation at local level;
• To promote knowledge and sharing of experiences on aspects of NCWR applications that can be further used.
• Reduced municipal water consumption in public buildings.
• Increase the irrigation water quantities produced by storm water collection pond in Wadi Saber area in the southern neighbourhood.
• More efficient use of water in residential and public buildings.
• Increased capacity of civil servants and stakeholders on non-conventional water resource techniques.
• Increased awareness of local authorities, governmental entities, socioeconomic actors, citizens on sustainable integrated management of non-conventional water resources.
• To contribute to the development of necessary planning and management skills at the local and national levels and facilitate regional know how transfer and cooperation.
