B.4 Environmental protection, climate change adaptation and mitigation
B.4.1: Support sustainable initiatives targeting innovative and technological solutions to increase water efficiency and encourage use of non-conventional water supply
The Gaza Strip has an average of 320 days of sunshine a year, making renewable energy an ideal option. The annual average solar intensity in the Gaza Strip is about 222 W per square meter — an optimal environment for the operation of photovoltaic cells. The installation of solar cells in schools, water facilities and hospitals will benefit 2,000,000 people overall.
The renewable energy generation project included the installation of 20 KW solar panels at Abasan Al-Kabira water well, which serves 30,000 people.
"The electricity shortage hindered the educational process, Also this project will improve the livelihoods of some 30,000 people, raise awareness about clean energy and lay the groundwork for the energy transition, creating jobs and protecting the environment.
The overall objective of this action is to supply Abasan Al-Kabira with electricity based on solar energy instead of fossil fuels by using the natural solar potential. A total capacity of 20 kW (kilowatt) in the form of solar panels shall be installed on the roofs of public building (Water Facilities). The electric power generated by these solar panels can be used directly in the water well, water pumps and therefore grant a reliable electricity supply. Unused electric power shall be fed into the electricity grid which gives the municipality a credit at the local electricity supplier equal to the amount of kWh fed into the grid. This credit will be accounted when buying back electricity when needed
- Replacing fossil fuels for power generation by solar energy.
- Supplying public buildings (water facility) with electricity through solar panels
- Raising public awareness for environmental issues in power generation.
- Stimulating local economic growth and transferring technological know-how from other countries to Palestine.
- Lowering electricity expenses of the municipality
- Solar panels on water facility will generate up to 100% of their energy consumption.
- Increase of technological know-how amongst high school students.
- Generation of jobs during the realisation of the action and subsequent increase in workers' know-how
