Who we are? MEDISS presents CRENoS (Centre for North South Economic Research)

CRENoS was established in 1993 by economists of the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari. Since 2000 it is a section of the Interuniversity Centre for Economic Research and Mobility (CIREM), which is administered by the Department of Economics and Business.
The Centre organizational structure consists of the Director, the Research Committee and the Board of Researchers. It involves 27 Researchers, 46 Associated researchers, Doctoral students (4), post-doc Fellows (2) and Research Assistants (9).

 

Main research lines pay special attention to:

  • the role played by intangible factors - human capital, social capital, institutional quality, technological change - in enhancing economic performance and local development; 
  • financial and monetary issues;
  • health and welfare systems;
  • natural resources and sustainable development.

The Centre organizes scientific conferences, seminars, summer schools and master course in European planning (MaPE). 
The MAPE Master course is aimed at professionals whose work involves EU initiatives or entails use of EU funds. 

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

CRENoS is partner of international research networks, participates in projects funded by the European Union and other international institutions.

  • 2017 to 2019: STRATUS: funded by Interreg IT – FR Marittimo (Environmental Strategies for Sustainable Tourism in France and Italy).
  • 2012 to 2017: GOBenin, funded by UE EuropeAid, (Drinking water, basic sanitation and implementation of national water policies in Abomey-Calavi, Benin, with ENAS). 
  • 2010 to 2012: TOUR-MED-EAU, funded by UE EuropeAid -Ciudad (Sustainability in tourism areas through improved public water management in Italy, Morocco and Tunisia. 
  • 2010 to 2012: SOUTH-EAST ARCHERITAGE, funded by UE EuropeAid-Ciudad (Roman heritage, archaeological and cultural tourism, local communities in Italy, Romania, Tunisia and Russian Federation).
  • 2007 to 2009: DESTINATIONS, funded by UNEP PAP RAC (Planning for sustainable tourism, environment, and local participation in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia). 
  • 2004 to 2009: Tourism, quality and participation in the island of Djerba, funded by Sardinian Regional Government (Local stakeholders, tourism industry and environment; Ecolabel tools).


CRENOS IN MEDISS PROJECT

The Centre is in charge of developing the Awareness Program in which a senior facilitator (Prof. Aide Esu – University of Cagliari) will coordinate the work of local facilitators (1 per area), analyse the needs assessment results and collect final reports from awareness sessions. The Awareness Program is focused on:

  • getting support and active engagement on water management and project activities; 
  • promoting exchange, development and uptake of good practices on non-convetnional water supply at cross-border level; 
  • enabling efficient application of MEDISS innovative solutions for local institutions and local communities. 

CRENoS is responsible for project communication.

Two professors of University of Cagliari – CRENoS, expert on socio – economic analysis, are also involved in the activities of technical Board of Experts (BoE).
