Let's meet the people who are involved in the MED-InA project, the people who work daily for designing our Mediterranean cities zero waste models, the people who embody the MEDiterranean INtegrated Alliance on waste for cities and citizens!

The MED-InA project has seven partners from five countries: here is our series of interviews for introducing each partner and its role in the project.

Sixth interviewee: Eng. Hani Abu Qdais on the behalf of the Jordan University of Science and Technology where he is Professor of Water and Environmental Engineering

What will be your role in the MED-InA project?

My main role is to coordinate the Work Package 4 of the project, which is mainly focusing on Developing an Integrated and Zero Solid Waste Management in municipalities partners in the Project (Irbid, La Marsa, and La Ribera).

What added value the MED-InA project will bring to the waste management sector?

By developing a zero solid waste management plan, the project will enhance the solid waste management system in the three partners’ municipalities by moving from traditional waste management systems into more sustainable one, that will conserve the environment, create jobs and better livelihood of the residents.

What is an integrated and zero waste management plan?

It is a modern approach to the solid waste management problem, by rethinking the waste and looking at it as a resource rather than garbage by adopting the four Rs options (Reduce, Reuse, Recover, Recycle).

The MED-InA project aims at being specific to the Mediterranean region. What are the main features of waste management specific to this region?

As a result of population growth, increase in urbanization and improved life styles, most municipalities in the Mediterranean Region are facing challenges of increasing solid waste amounts, which requires increased investments to deal with. By following an integrated approach in dealing with such problem, municipalities will develop options for managing and treating less amounts of waste and consequently lowering the impact on the environment.
