Holoportation is increasing its popularity for real-time volumetric video representations of natural content. This technology has the capacity of showing holograms of remote humans. Its applications range from traditional telecommunications to entertainment, going through healthcare and industrial manufacturing. For a real-time remote representation, the holoportation involves key challenges in terms of data processing, delivery, and rendering.

The MED GAIMS project is characterized by the introduction of a novel gamification approach for touristic experiences, thanks to which, the tourist will be introduced to a new dimension in the way tourism is lived. Within the MED GAIMS project, i2CAT is introducing the Holoportation as a novel immersive technology to experience museums and places of interest in touristic locations.

I2CAT has developed a system capable of holoporting the users within a Virtual Reality scenario simulating a touristic experience. The Holoportation, a word that stands for Holographic Teletransportation, will make this possible.

The participants, while being holoported, will be fully immersed inside the VR environment, as if they were physically there. This opens the door to witness new ways and new approaches, thanks to Virtual Reality, in which a high-fidelity model of any museum, exhibition, or other attraction can be reproduced. This possibility will increase the scenarios for gamification, introducing interactivity with the scenario, the possibility of reconstructing ancient, or partially damaged, buildings and objects. Moreover, the possibility of living the experience as a game, thus expanding the target audience to the youngest generations.

Introducing the holoportation in touristic attractions, the participants will, as in a video game, explore the VR reproduction, solving enigmas, discovering the place, and learning from the experience.
