It is an important and international campaign to clean up the beaches and the natural sites all around the Mediterranean Sea. People from different cultures, all unite against pollution of marine litter along our beaches and sea. From Algeria to France, from Greece to Malta, from Portugal to Palestine and Israel, thousands of volunteers meet for a clean sea.

This year, the Clean Up The Med Campaign, coordinated from 1995 by Legambiente, is promoted by the COMMON project, and thanks to it, there will be the chance to further expand the boundaries of the initiative, involving Lebanon and Tunisia on the front lines. The campaign will be held from 25 to 27 September, for a weekend dedicated to love for the environment, for the territory and for our sea.

Clean-up the Med involved 21 Mediterranean countries and, this year, over 50 institutions have joined the campaign. School, volunteers, citizens, and local civil societies will clean up the coasts and natural reserves from litter of any sort generated by wrong human activities. The main purpose of Clean Up The Med is not only that of physically removing waste but also to draw attention to the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea and motivate communities to work together to change the situation.

To date, many studies have shown that the contamination of the Mediterranean Sea is extremely serious, and the impact of plastic waste is critical. Marine litter monitoring is an important tool of the initiative. We call the contribution of all associations involved in the event to understand the levels of diffusion of plastic waste along shores. This is crucial to address common policies to reduce the impact.
